Richard Leplastrier is a seminal figure in Australian architecture and architectural education. He eschews publicity and his built works are secret treasures to be discovered only by those privileged enough to be introduced to them.

The past 8,5 years have been about between worlds, of moving on and finding something new, of missed chances, and promises on distant horizons. After 8 years of being on the road, of working and living in various countries, I decided to settle down in Berlin. From the past to the future. Where the walls match our skin.

Inside the Great Gatsby

I grew up in a small town where entertainment was largely left up to nature and what you made of your surroundings. Besides the fun of throwing water-balloons and rose-hips on any occasional day, gaining access to buildings and neglected farms over the weekends when nobody was around was also a game of choice. Ever since I have a passion for deserted buildings. A while ago I discovered this amazing House in Berlin.

It dates from before 1834, and survived a couple of fires. Remaining it’s brick style. Entering this abandoned house, which also functioned as a guest-house and has a ballroom, was like a 1920’s summer fantasy. Almost feeling like an archaeologist of haunted walls and loaded spaces.

One of Chaubin’s favorite stories is his discovery of the Prometheus Camp for youth offenders on the Finnish border. What he found was not the ominous concrete structures he had previously encountered, but a cluster of ramshackle beach-like bungalows with a Suprematist form. The buildings were constructed with sketches of lunar bases intended to be built on the moon.
